Hiroshima.August.92

The footage for this film was shot during my invitation to the Hiroshima Animation Festival in 1992, but it was not completed and set to music until 1997. This is my second multiple-exposure 16 mm film with handmade masks, beginning with horizontal and vertical stripes and increasingly complex variations and combinations. In Part 1 – Hotel Room – the image is broken down into horizontal and vertical stripes and reassembled with double exposure. Part 2 – Collecting Houses – shows four vertical image stripes throughout, with various combinations of different house facades that are particularly suitable for this due to their shape. Part 3 – Beach / City – combines views of busy streets with a boat trip taken by guests to a barbecue party. Beginning with a horizontal division of the images, I experiment with increasingly smaller divisions of the film image; at the end, a shot of fish on the grill is combined with a major intersection in the centre of Hiroshima. It is a fourfold exposure of the film material, but through the special use of horizontal and vertical strip masks, the film image is divided into 64 small squares.
Maz Lauterer contributed the sometimes quite pop-like music to the film, and he also integrated some of the field recordings I had made in Hiroshima. (Thomas Renoldner)
