“First of all the faces of Jesus Christ, painted by Piero della Francesca, of Nikolaus Lenau, the romantic Austrian poet who spent his last years in a lunatic asylum and of me were shown. One then hears a sentence by della Francesca while seeing the portrait of Jesus Christ: ‘Form and content are like brother and sister in the venerable hall of space’; on the portrait of Lenau his sentence: ‘I am poetry itself. My most selfest self is poetry.’ And I say ‘My message throws everyone back on himself.’ The dead faces are, as it were, brought back to life and to talk, in that I blend them together with my face while grimacing. Intriguing similarities and effects then emerge. In the same way that faces are mixed, messages that have been extended by Jesus Christ’s sentence ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself’ then merge. The theorem of identity is put into question in that the messages mutually relativise one another.”
