The Public as Exhibit

The visitors of the exhibition “Multi Media 1” at the “Galerie junge Generation” in Vienna were interviewed and filmed with a video camera. These interviews could then be seen live on television screens in other spaces around the gallery. In response to the visitor’s request, the video footage or other tapes could be repeated on another TV set so that the visitors could watch themselves once again. “The public at an exhibition was itself exhibited, the viewer viewed; a de-materialisation of the object of art and a modification of the concept of art. The experience of time, psychological confrontations with one’s own picture in a public space, delays in time.”
