DYAD

The stereoscopic video DYAD is based on software especially written for this project. It is a specialized program that renders individual sounds synchronously visible in the form of a three-dimensional matrix. These animated 3D objects are subsequently translated back into digital sounds.

The perceptual faculty of the viewer is intentionally overwhelmed as the images on the left and the images on the right display distinct colors and forms at the same time.

A static red cross hair is ingeniously placed at the exact center of each of the images throughout the entire duration of the video. Viewers can take optical hold of these marks time and again when they are overcome by the high-speed 3D animations and lose their orientation.

For the most part the video is in the black, white and red color combination once preferred by Constructivists. Nebulous white swarms and grids of pixels rise up on a continuously black background, the sounds practically exploding the images. The color surfaces, pixel rush and wire frame cascades combine in multiple exposures culminating in a fulminant visual "overkill".

This work by Jung An Tagen stands squarely in the tradition of abstract conceptual experimental film. Through the application of newest technologies, it succeeds in updating this tradition in a manner aesthetically suited to the 21st century. (Norbert Pfaffenbichler)
