Battle and Kiss

What initially seems to serve as an echo chamber for Ulrike Ottinger's "Madame X. An Absolute Ruler"(1977) is soon revealed to be a radical and irreverent queerification (appropriation) of Asian theater and martial art traditions. A fantastically costumed cast runs and freezes, battles and kisses on a flat rooftop of a mirrored high-rise building. Sketches and drafts in the aftermath serve as a footnote. (Andrea B. Braidt)
