Solution of Fantasy

After concerning myself with the body parts nose, finger, eye, mouth, face, legs I made awork about hair. As we know, hair borders upon the body and so it fulfills the figure of speechknown as metonymy. As long as hair is part of the body it is positively valued. The hair ofwomen is an ideal of poetry and advertising. A lock of hair is a beloved aide mémoire and apartial object worthy of conservation. If hair however is separated from the body, snipped offand lying on the floor or found in the proverbial soup, then hair is something reprehensible oralienating – perhaps because hair separated from the body is dead matter. The transformationof hair from positive to negative, from one’s own to something foreign, from something pleas-ant to disturbing, seemed to me to be representative of the position of the body in our culture.
