VISIONary. Innovative Film from Austria

Fri May 1, 2009 - Thu May 7, 2009, 9:30 p.m.
Filmschau / Bundesländertournee Vermittlungsprogramm für Schulen

VISIONary sees itself as a mediator of innovative positions in contemporary Austrian audiovisual art, specifically short films, experimental films, documentaries and music videos, which are rarely shown outside the Viennese art house cinemas and festivals in the federal states.

At the beginning of the 1950s, a new development in cinematography began in Austria, which gradually and sometimes radically distanced itself from commercially oriented film production and sought predominantly poetic and formal expression. Since the 1960s, innovative film has had a rich history and is probably one of Austria's most important contributions to world cinema.
The works of - to name but a few - Peter Kubelka, VALIE EXPORT, Gustav Deutsch, Kurt Kren, Mara Mattuschka, Peter Tscherkassky and subsequent generations have long been part of the canon of film & video history, are represented in the most important collections of cinematheques and museums and tour extensively at international festivals. The next generation of domestic cinematic art is also continuing these international successes abroad, as confirmed by sixpackfilm's annual festival sales and distribution figures. They are finally going on tour again in this country!

The first edition of VISIONary was programmed by Michael Loebenstein (organizer, author, media designer) and Norbert Pfaffenbichler (film artist and curator), whereby the selection was mainly limited to productions from 2007 and 2008. The major Austrian cinema films, which are regularly shown in Austrian cinemas anyway, were not included in the selection. When compiling the program, we attached particular importance to originality in storytelling, socio-political relevance and formal innovation across the individual formats. Due to the variety of exciting works, the seven programs for the one-week film show were enriched with two late-night specials.
