Film and _ is an open invitation to dialogue, a format dedicated to artist film and its mutual relation- ships with other visual, applied, and time-based art forms.

There is a long tradition of queer-feminist performance practices that engage with the body as a surface of both imposed inscriptions and personal expressions. This is hardly surprising given that sensory experiences—from (sexual) pleasure to almost indescribable pain—so clearly manifest on and through the body. During filming, the camera does not serve a purely documentary role: Sometimes it becomes the artist’s accomplice, and other times a stand-in for people who have refused to look or listen for too long. Breath and voice can give expression to these experiences. Ideas of what a body is supposed to be and look like are shaped by mediated images in many ways—far more than by everyday observation. In reality, the normative body is the exception, not the rule. The performance artists presented in this program demonstrate a wide spectrum of sociopolitically relevant ways to unsettle received ideas and stage alternative, renegotiated images of the body. From deli- cately playful to radically humorous to outright liberating, these are all bodies of substance.
